Abstract

Dependence on generative artificial intelligence (AI) raises questions about students’ ability to maintain independence in decision-making. This study aims to examine the relationship between generative AI dependence and decision-making independence among active students at Universitas Airlangga. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 65 students selected through purposive sampling, using a Likert-scale questionnaire and Pearson correlation analysis. The results revealed a very weak, positive, and statistically nonsignificant relationship between the two variables (r = 0.103; p = 0.416). This finding indicates that generative AI dependence was not significantly associated with decision-making independence in the study sample. The study contributes to research on AI use in higher education by highlighting the importance of distinguishing technological dependence from students’ capacity to make independent decisions.
